The Lupus Magazine's Geoff Thomas talked to Morgan Woolard, the now infamous 1st runner up of Miss USA who was video taped saying, "I have been cured of Lupus and I consider myself a medical miracle". I am not even going to fake, when the news first hit that she made this comment, the logical side of me wanted to get the whole story. But the advocate passionate side of me wanted to get a baseball bat. No question. Either way, I took it as another advantage to have a captive audience to educate about Lupus. Here Lupus is in the limelight for one brief moment, it shouldn't be overshadowed by a misleading statement. What made matters worse, was when fellow Lupies (patients who have Lupus) all over the world contacted her Facebook page demanding an explanation, Miss Woolard was AWOL. Many of us opted against cussing her out and breaking out every blond joke that we could think of. But some did more than just question her comments. Which shows the span of emotions that were felt by Lupies all over the world. Johnny Trash another writer/contributor of The Lupus Magazine started a petition for Miss Woolard to retract her statement. Which made to most logical and political sense. Johnny, and I and many other concerned Lupies sent that petition to anyone who was concerned that the statement would confuse the mass public about the disease. I just KNEW she (or her publicist) would respond to the community within a matter of days to "set the record straight". But she didn't. Not even to defend herself, let alone set the record straight. ANYONE who has Lupus or a friend, family member even a co-worker of someone who has Lupus, knows that Lupus is not to be trifled with. An estimated 20,000 Lupus patients die from the disease (Cure4Lupus.org Lupus Symptoms). Treatments can include low dosages of Prednisone to high dosages of a chemotherapy drug called Cytoxan. This ain't a common cold here people.
Alas, Miss Woolard has remained silent until now. I've read the majority of the article, but due to Lupus aches and pains I skimmed some. The first half was an in depth look at her background. The latter portion talks about her Lupus. We have an eerie and similar experience with regard to extreme flares. So check out the article and comment on what YOU THINK??
